Walkom: Euro crisis pushing Canada more into U.S. arms

In spite of Wednesday’s rescue attempt by world central banks, Europe remains in danger of fracturing. Its debt crisis is not solved.

For Canada, the short-term effects of any Euro-disaster will be punishing. The long-term effect will be to tie us even more closely to the United States.

The reasons for Europe’s predicament are stark. Caught between politics and economics, the 17 countries that use the euro as common currency are in an impossible bind.

Feds to put Attawapiskat under third-party management

Under fiery criticism from NDP interim leader Nycole Turmel in question period in the House of Commons, Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan said Wednesday the federal government is appointing someone to take charge.

“The on-the-ground assessment has determined that urgent health and safety issue demand immediate action. Therefore we have informed Chief Spence we are placing the first nation in third-party management,” Duncan said.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper responded to several rounds of criticism from Turmel, NDP MP Charlie Angus, whose riding includes Attawapiskat, and Liberal interim leader Bob Rae.

Each time he reiterated the fact the government has spent more than $90 million in the community since 2006, and the results have been unacceptable

I hope no one is shocked that Harper is laying down for the Americans. Laying down our sovereignty that is…

Border deal fuels concerns in Canada.

Armed U.S. police officers will for the first time be allowed to operate in Canada along with the RCMP as part of far-reaching changes in Canadian-American border operations to be unveiled next week by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and President Barack Obama.

The joint action plan to be announced at the White House will also break new ground by introducing exit-entry records that will track the movements of everyone who leaves the United States or Canada, with the information available to authorities in both countries.

In the months and years ahead, the deal between Ottawa and Washington will reshape security, travel and commercial arrangements at the border in a variety of profound ways — some of which have already raised alarms among Canadians.

In a heart warming story just in time for the holiday season, a 103-year-old woman in Atlanta avoided foreclosure of her home Tuesday afternoon, thanks entirely to the kindness of strangers.

According to WSBTV Atlanta, movers hired by Deutsche Bank AG and police were ready to go through with the bank’s request to remove Vita Lee and her 83-year old daughter from their home.

However, when they first got sight of Lee, they had a change of heart and declined to go through with it.

Pakistan FM: Sorry Not Enough After Friday Attack

Speaking to the Pakistani Senate today, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar warned that the Friday attack on a pair of military bases by US forces was not going to be forgotten, and that a simple “apology” won’t work.

Pakistan released new video footage of the aftermath of the attacks, saying the strikes were deliberate and that US warplanes refused to stop attacking after nearly two hours of calls for a ceasefire.

Mini-Nukes, Flying ‘Terminators,’ and 8 More Air Weapons That Will Blow You Away

Even the most high-tech warplane in the world is useless without its weapons. From the earliest days of aerial combat, fighter planes succeeded or failed depending on the accuracy, lethality and reliability of their machine guns, cannons, rockets and bombs. That’s why the U.S. military is hard at work on a dizzying array of pricey new guided munitions to match its trillion-dollar investment in stealth fighters, bombers and killer drones. Some are super smart. Others, super fast. A few are designed to be tiny. All of them have one purpose: to blow away the target, and only the target.
