Solvent Contra Nugget

Guess what happens when a newspaper has a former Conservative MP and current employee of a conservative think tank writing opinion for it?

If you guessed that said newspaper would be shamelessly propagating conservative talking points, then you guessed right.

The North Bay Nugget publishes the work of Monte Solberg. On October 30, Solberg discusses the lesson for Liberals that the recent Rob Ford victory represents.

While I can’t argue with Solberg that the Ford victory represents a defeat for the Liberal mentality, I would expand the meaning of this defeat to include “mentality” in general.

Clearly an angry 905 belt has sabotaged the city of Toronto by electing a boorish man-thing with a hatred for cyclists and public transit, and all things that make a city work, that suburbanite elements of society’s problems do not identify with. A 60 dollar vehicle registration fee has the suburbanites up in arms in a city that is choking on exhaust. Talk about mental…

If the conservatives want to own Rob Ford, I think that would be highly appropriate. Check out the following vids of Rob Ford flaunting his conservative mentality.

Monte Solberg uses the Rob Ford victory to warn the Liberals that they should abandon such ideas as a universal day care plan, because a Rob Ford would never support the idea that government should ensure that parents can afford to be employed by providing affordable child care. How he makes this connection is unclear. Perhaps he means that since the 905 belt of commuters who elected Rob Ford, and who live in poorly constructed boxes with postage stamp sized lawns in front and back, are famous for spending more time in their cars than with their kids, children are no longer a priority in a world that needs to learn from the Ford mentality? It is difficult to say.

There is no point in refuting Solberg point by point, it is more important to remind people that the Nugget is a conservative mouth piece, and that most people don’t have anything to learn from the Rob Ford war on mentality, except that a vote for conservatives, will bring about more dangerous Rob Ford type characters in positions of power. Presumably, The Nugget will encourage us to celebrate that when it happens.
